S.V.E.C. Central Library – A PROFILE

Information has assumed greater significance than ever as a vital resource in teaching- learning process. The complementary role of the library as an inevitable partner in an educational institute needs no new mention. Many new dimensions have been added to the library. Electronic information resource as an important component of the library in growing year after year. The computer has swept the library in all it is operations-storage and dissemination of information.

The college library started 15 years ago in a humble way has grown in many directions fulfilling the ever increasing information needs of the departments on one hand and keeping abreast of the emerging technologies relating to library.

The college is satisfied on the achievements of the library. There is need for a special mention on a few counts:

  1. The Library is extensively utilized. Special care is taken to educate and encourage its users on the importance of reading.
  2. Text books are made available maintaining reasonable student- book ratio.
  3. Special care has been taken to develop digital library.
  4. All operations are automated using a standard software (SOUL) developed by a unit of the UGC.
  5. There are optimum number of persons on the staff of the library, and
  6. The volume of library services provided to the users are highly satisfactory.

The management of the college has bestowed special attention on development of the library as a hub on the campus. The library has ambitious program to create best services possible. This can be very well assessed through the large budgetary allocations made for the materials and services. Ambitious programs are afoot for further improvement of the service.

A new building to house the library is underway at a central point of the college campus. This is designed on the principle of “Green Architecture” using natural resources. The building will be of three floors initially making a provision for an addition of two more floors. Each floor will be of 15,000 Sqft making a total carpet area of 45,000 Sqft. The estimated cost of the building is Rs. 6 crores. The development activity will gain further momentum when the library moves to the new building.

DIGITAL LIBRARY:

In order to provide access to electronic sources of information, digital library is started with a provision of 32 computer systems. The following services are available:
a) Access to 199 Journals of the IEEE.
b) Catalogue of project reports submitted to the Departments of the Engineering College.
c) Browsing catalogue of Project Reports, Back Volumes of Periodicals, CD’s, Question papers with writing facility.
d) National programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL)
e) Access to free open source journals and books.

 

OPAC (Online Public Access Catalogue):

Students can browse the library database by clicking the key words like - Author, Title, Subject, etc. available in OPAC. Status of the book and user can also be checked.

 

AUTOMATION:

The library operations are fully automated using the ‘SOUL’ package developed by INFLIBNET of the UGC.

The library is highly used by the students and staff.

STAFF:
A)   The library is headed by a Professor assisted by Librarian, two Library Assistants, one Computer Operator, four Record Assistants, and two Attenders.
B)   Library staff are encouraged to participate in the seminars, workshops, training program, etc. (Annexure A)

 
 

XEROX FACILITY:
Xerox facility is provided at a subsidized rate (0.50np per page).

 

DELNET:
Library is a part of the “DEVELOPING LIBRARY NETWORK (DELNET)”.  In all cases, when a book is not available in the library the document is procured from DELNET through Inter Library Loan (ILL).

 

BOOK BANK COLLECTION:
Book Bank accounts for a sizeable number of books. The S.C. and S.T. students are eligible to borrow from this collection. This extra facility has been found to be of immense value.

 

DEPARTMENTAL LIBRARIES:
Besides the central library, each department maintains a small collection consisting of frequently used materials by staff and students.
